I’ve always loved jotting down the more beautiful things and the more ugly things I see happen as I go about my life in this crazy and awesome world. Each and every day I am reminded of just how wonderful humans are around me, or I am given examples that I am able to learn from and live up to. I am also sometimes reminded just how far we as a species have to go. These are the things I’ve noticed and jotted down the last five weeks or so…

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw a man bend over and tenderly kiss his preschool age son as they passed in front of my next door neighbor’s house. I watched the child embrace his father as the protector and friend whom he obviously was. And then they just kept walking.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I heard a man yell loudly at his child, telling him that if he doesn’t get buckled faster he was going to “get an ass whooping” when they got home.

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw a young mother patiently talk to her screaming child. She had the perfect balance of firmness love. She was understanding. She took into account her child’s feelings and validated them. She quite effectively put an end to her child’s tantrum in the most beautiful way.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I heard a woman drop a looooooong slew of F-bombs to a child that couldn’t have been older than four-years-old, complaining about all the other fucking idiot shoppers, and all the fucking this, and all the fucking that. She was having a bad fucking day, by the sounds of it.

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw a good woman dancing and singing while she drove down the road in her minivan. Her kids were waving their arms and singing along behind her.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I saw a man and a woman smoking in the front seat of their car, with the windows rolled up. There was a baby strapped into a car seat directly behind him.

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw a kid reach into his pocket and give his quarters to children from another family (standing in line at the restaurant) so that they could buy bouncy balls. He had never met them before, and he literally jumped with excitement as they turned the knob on the dispenser. He was only 11 or so.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I went shopping with a friend and while we were out at the mall, somebody pick-pocketed the wallet from her purse.

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw an old couple who had to be in their late 80s walking hand in hand. I saw him sneak a peek at her and smile because just seeing her still alive and still kicking it next to him obviously made him happy.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I saw a lady literally slam her salad plate down and declare to her husband how much she hated the restaurant we were eating in. The crisis? The salad bar was out of croutons.

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw a man sneak up on his wife who was standing in line to buy movie tickets. He kissed her on the cheek and pulled her close to him.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I saw a man grab his kid by the collar and drag him back to his seat, scolding him sharply as he did so.

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw a sister consoling her kid brother about something, what I don’t know, but making sure her brother knew that everything would be okay.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I overheard an older teenage girl telling her friends that she didn’t want her sister around because her sister was “a loser.”

MADE ME HAPPY: I saw a woman offer the last available shopping cart to another woman. The other woman had several kids in tow and was quite thankful for it.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I watched as a man turned red because the lady in front of him had more than 12 items in her cart. He pushed his cart to the side, left his groceries inside it, and stomped out of the store.

MADE ME HAPPY: The waitress at Olive Garden brought me some extra Andes mints.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? A different waitress at Olive Garden told me that I had hit the limit for grated parmesan cheese on my pasta.

MADE ME HAPPY: I spent an entire day with Noah not working. We played, we wrestled, we watched movies, and we laughed a lot. At one point Noah gave me an unexpected Bear Hug and told me that he loved me. It was a great day.

MIGHT NEED IMPROVEMENT? I spent the better part of a day completely ignoring Noah, letting him play video games. At dinnertime I told him to make himself some instant Mac & Cheese.
